Mylos beach (Παραλία Μύλος) is beautiful, long and wide bay in Lefkada Island, Greece, near Agios Nikitas village. This exceptional travel destination belong to the best beaches of Lefkada, which offer breathtaking natural sceneries and turquoise waters for visitors.

To access Mylos beach there are two different ways, a hiking trail from Agios Nikitas, and a short boat trip by local water taxis. One of the most characteristic parts of the spacious bay is a huge sand dune behind the shore, from where amazing panoramic views can be seen to the Ionian Sea.

Where to find Mylos beach in Lefkada Island, and how to get there

Mylos beach is located on the west coast of Lefkada Island, as many other top travel destinations. The bay lies directly next to Agios Nikitas (behind the village), 14 kilometers away from Lefkada town, 25 kilometers away from Vasiliki, and 28 kilometers away from Nidri.

The location of the bay is very special, and because of its natural conditions Mylos beach can be reached by hiking on a trail, or by a taxi boat from Agios Nikitas. First of all, travellers have to drive to Agios Nikitas, or they have to catch a local bus transport, which depart from Lefkada town. Free parking lots for cars were built next to the main road, which leads through Agios Nikitas.

The hiking trail to Mylos beach starts from the central pedestrian street of Agios Nikitas. Find the central street of the village, where a few signs show the way up to to hill, or walk to this coordinate: 38.788710, 20.612672. The signs help to find the trail, you can’t miss it.

The hiking trail between Mylos beach and Agios Nikitas is not too long, with a length of approx. 700 meters. The walk through the hill leads on a narrow path, filled by stones and roots of trees. By walking to Mylos beach on this footpath there can bee seen panoramic views to the houses of the village first, and after we reach the top of the hill, the entire bay can be seen from above.

An average hiking time to Mylos takes a half an hour from Agios Nikitas (which depends mostly on your physical condition), the best periods for walks are in the morning hours. On hot days hikings up to the hill and down to the sea can be really exhausting, especially if you carry heavier beach equipment.

Taxi boats to Mylos beach provide comfortable and fast access, without climbing trough a hill. To find the taxi boats which depart to Mylos, visitors have to walk to the beach of Agios Nikitas, where the boats depart in every hour (or every half hour during high season months). It’s easy to recognize where passengers can step into these small sized taxi boats, just watch the buoys.

The boat trip to Mylos beach takes just a few minutes, because the bay is situated literally next to Agios Nikitas. The prices of water taxis have to pay on the boat, 4-5 Euros per person. During the short boat trip we can see the old stonehouses of Agios Nikitas village from the sea, and unique views to the famous west coast of Lefkada Island.

An important informations for travellers, who would like to visit Mylos beach by boat: taxi boats don’t depart, when the waves are getting too high on the west coast. The safety of passengers is the most important, and walking through the hiking trail remains the only option for access the bay.

The bay of Mylos beach has one of the largest shores on the west coast of Lefkada Island, which is usually not overcrowded even in July and in August. Turquoise blue colours of the Ionian Sea are incredible her when the sun shines strong and there are no such clouds.

Behind the coast mother nature formed a huge sand dune, which adds slightly more exotic outfit to this exceptional coastline. You can climb up to the sand dune (which is the largest sand dune in Lefkada Island) from where breathtaking photos can be taken, the entire bay is front of us. Best panoramic views to Mylos beach can be seen from the top of the hiking trail, which leads here from Agios Nikitas.

Most parts of Mylos beach are not organized, but in the north area some sunbeds can be rented during summer season. The prices of local sunbeds are usually high, it’s worth to ask before using them.

Seabed of Mylos beach is filled primarily by coarse sand and some pebbles, travellers do not need water shoes here. Ionian Sea deepens quite quickly here at most places, offering great conditions to swim, and to snorkel.

Sea temperatures are pleasant at most of the time, with average temperatures of 24 – 26 Celsius from June until September. Sea currents can increase or decrease actual sea temperatures by 1-2 Celsius, but during summer time cooler periods don’t take long.

When the Ionian Sea is calm here and there are no such significant waves, the waters of Mylos beach are crystal clear, can be suitable for children as well. Snorkeling and diving is a local activity for kids, but the seabed is mostly barren at most places due to the pebbles – for best places for snorkeling it’s recommended to visit the rocky ends of the bay.

Due to the location of the bay, Mylos is exposed to open sea currents and bigger waves. The stronger waves make incredible ‘Lefkada blue’ sea colours to the entire coastline, which are beloved by thousands. Bigger waves are amazing to see, and can bring a lot of fun to local beach life, but in these periods travellers have to pay attention for safety as well.

On top of the surrounding hills you can notice some ruined windmills. Local windmills played imporant role in the agriculture of Lefkada Island, even this bay was named after these buildings. The name ‘Mylos beach’, Paralia Mylos, or Παραλία Μύλος in Greek language means ‘beach of the mills’.

In recent years these naturist parts had changed, because the bay became much popular in Lefkada Island, including those areas. In pre season and in post season, when the bay is less visited by tourists, it’s worth to check actual conditions for naturism.

Nearest bar is a small cantina on top of the sand dune, offering cold drinks and some snacks, and shaded areas for guests. Mylos beach has no other restaurants with traditional meals, just this small cantina. Classic restaurants are can be find much further away, in Agios Nikitas, which can be accessed from here only by hiking back to the village through a hill, or by catching a taxi boat.

The region, where Mylos beach is located, has several accommodations for a stay. Most of the local apartments and studios were built in Agios Nikitas, the only village on the west coast of Lefkada Island, which has direct sea exit.
