Ammoglossa beach (Αμμόγλωσσα) is a shallow lagoon in Lefkada Island, which has calm waters, tranquil atmospheres, located 2 kilometeres from the capital. This attraction lies near to the floating bridge of Agia Mavra, just a few meters from the entrance of the island, but this coast belong to the less visited places.
Its shape changes often, because of the sandy seabed, influenced highly by local sea currents. At some maps we find this place as Αμμόγλωσσα in Greek language, or Paralia Amoglossa.

Where to find Ammoglossa beach in Lefkada Island, and how to get there
The access of Ammoglossa beach is very easy in Lefkada Island, because this place is situated directly next to the pontoon bridge of Agia Mavra, which is the entrance of the island from the Greek mainland, 2 kilometers away from the capital. From the direction of Lefkada town, don’t drive onto the pontoon bridge, just drive straight on the road, and after 100 meters the road ends at Ammoglossa. Free parking is possible directly next to the road.

The views to Ammoglossa beach are similar to lagoons, because the coast is characterized by lagoon-like shallow waters and emerald sea colours at many places. The seabed is primarily filled by coarse sand, and because of a shallow seabed the sea temperatures are usually warm here – this cove belongs to the warmest beaches in Lefkada Island.
The area of Ammoglossa is not organized, and lacks long lines of sunbeds – visitors have to carry own beach umbrellas and equipments, including some food and drink. This coast is visited primarily by locals – especially residents of Lefkada town – most of the tourists spend their time by visiting other beaches. The locals like the shallow waters near the capital, which are suitable for families even with smaller children.
What to find when visiting Ammoglossa beach
From the coast we can see the thick walls of Agia Mavra castle (Κάστρο Αγίας Μαύρας), which is situated directly in front of the lagoon. Agia Mavra is the largest and most famous medieval fortress in Lefkada Island, which is worth a visit when we discover best historical sights of the region.
On the north side of the lagoon, behind the stone wall, there were built three breakwaters, with lengths of 80-100 meters. At the breakwaters the actual weather conditions are often windy, and that parts of the beach are much less suitable for swimming. The stone wall behind the breakwaters is a local photo spot to the area, from where panoramic views can be seen to every direction.
Behind the lagoon, next to parking lots there are some less picturesqe industrial buildings and ship repair facilities, some of these are now abandoned.
Attractions near Ammoglossa beach
When you visit in Lefkada Ammoglossa beach (Αμμόγλωσσα), you can visit some other beaches of the area quick and easy. The nearest place to swim is known as Kastro beach (Παραλία Κάστρο), situated directly in the neighborhood, literally just a few meters away from the lagoon. Kastro beach is organized sometimes by a few sunbeds, and a cantina, parking lots for free can be find next to the road.
The continuation of Kastro beach is the long Gyra beach (Παραλία Γύρας), with a length of more than 2 kilometers on the north side of Lefkada Island. After leaving Gyra you will meet the best kitesurf spot in Lefkada Island, Agios Ioannis, where the old windmills were built. In the afternoons dozens of kitesurfers sail their kites on the blue waters of Ionian Sea, offering interesting attraction of this area.
This area of kitesurfers is known as Agios Ioannis beach, but the central parts of the area, where restaurants and bars waiting for guests, are situated a few hundred meters away. Agios Ioannis is also a calm village with a lof of apartments and studios, just a few kilometers away from the bustling streets of the capital.
The visitors of Ammoglossa beach can see yachts and smaller boats, which arrive or leave the port of Lefkada town. The entrance of the port is here, when the floating bridge is in opened position.
Nearest accommodations to Ammoglossa are situated in Lefkada town (which is the capital of the island) and in Agios Ioannis village, just 2-4 kilometers from here.
