Egremni beach (Paralia Egkremni, Παραλία Εγκρεμνοί) is one of the most amazing places on the west coast of Lefkada Island, Greece. The beach is best known for its incredible blue sea colours and steep white cliffs, which form dramatic natural beauty to the entire area.

Travellers describe Egremni beach often as one of the most beautiful places in Greece, and belong to the most beloved attractions of Lefkada. The stairs, which leads down to the blue sea are legendary, because an earthquake destroyed the old route several years ago, but in recent years there was built a new, much advanced and picturesque path.

For years, due the local geographical conditions, this extraordinary travel destination could be only reached by boat trips, but since 2021 it can be accessed again by cars or scooters from every villages of Lefkada Island.

Where to find Egremni beach in Lefkada Island, and how to get there in 2026

Egremni beach is situated on the southwest coastline of Lefkada Island, approx. 39 kilometers away from Lefkada town, 16 kilometers away from Vasiliki, and 37 kilometers away from Nidri. The nearest village to Egremni beach is Athani, which lies just 4 kilometers away from this place. Athani is a traditional mountain village of the west coast, offering endless peace, lush pine forests, and some restaurants and apartments for travellers.

What you should know about the exceptional location of Egremni

The location of Egremni beach is quite special in Lefkada Island, because high mountains and steep cliff make its access much difficult on the west coastline. The local roads lead in the mountains, the route is winding and narrow. From the parking lots of Egremni the visitors have to walk a few hundred meters, down through more than 400 stairs, which have their own story.

A popular choice to visit this place by cars or scooters in 2026. The route to Egremni beach starts near Athani village, on the southwest coastline of Lefkada Island. Near Athani traffic signs show the junctions, where travellers have to leave the main road. The signs are varied, but can’t be missed: Egremni beach, Egkremni beach, Paralia Egkremni, and Παραλία Εγκρεμνοί in Greek language are the main guides for travellers.

It’s worth to know this place lies just a few kilometres away from Porto Katsiki beach, which is the other primary attraction of Lefkada. Where to park at Egremni beach, and what are the costs

The parking lots of Egremni beach are paid parking lots, situated still approx. 1300 meters from the stairs. The public parkings were built next to the narrow road, but the last road section is closed for traffic, and visitors have to walk more than 1 kilometer until they reach the stairs.

The legendary stairs of Egremni were constructed safe, but the path is steep and walking can be exhausting, especially during hot afternoons. From the stairs breathtaking panoramic views can be seen, which are beloved by many travellers.

In period of 2015 – 2021 the only way to access Egremni beach was by local boat trips, because on November 17, 2015 an earthquake demolished the coastline, ruining its original 300 stairs and the road. After a few years of construction, from 2021 the white shore of the coast can be accessed again by cars. Several roads sections were renewed, and much stronger and safer stairs were constructed onto the cliffs. In 2026 we experienced there are some changes, because the stairs suffered sime injures due to winter weather.

How to access Egremni beach by daily boat trips and excursions in 2026 from local ports

The easiest access to Egremni beach in Lefkada Island is by a daily boat trip. Boat excursions are especially recommended if there are smaller children or older people in your family, because walking on the steep stairs may be hard for some people. Boat trips to Egremni beach depart from the port of Nidri (Nydri) and from the port of Vasiliki, because only these two villages offer daily boat excursions to the west coast.

Boat trips from Nidri and Vasiliki depart in the morning hours from the ports, primarily from the end of May until the end of September. The excursion boats spend a few hours on the beach, depending on actual schedule. Daily cruises depart several times a week, from both ports of Lefkada Island: actual schedules are avalaible in local tourist offices, can be read on flyers and leaflets, and in the evenings in front the boats.

There are periods, when the Ionian Sea is calm on the west coast, and passengers can step to the coast for sunbathing, swimming or snorkeling. At some days, when the sea has bigger waves, the excursion boats have to stay on the open water, depending on actual weather conditions.

According to many travellers, Egremni beach is one of the best beaches not just in Lefkada Island, but also in Greece. On hot and sunny days the colours of the Ionian Sea are extremely blue here, and the waters have incredible contrast with the white coloured sand and pebbles.

What to find at Egremni beach

The long coastline of Egremni beach is primarily filled by coarse sand and by some pebbles, the seabed deepens quick at most places. Despite its a popular travel destination in Lefkada, most parts of the coastline is unorganized in recent years, where only few parasols or sunbeds can be rented at some periods.

Pay attention: staying directly under the vertical cliffs involves higher risk, and it is not recommended. There may be some falling stones and rocks, and its recommended to stay closer to the sea. The cliffs are strengthened at many places, but nobody can guarantee the safety of visitors in the shade of such giant cliffs.

The shore of the beach is approx. 2 kilometers long, one of the longest beaches on the west coastline of Lefkada Island. The stairs are situated in the middle, which is the most popular, and crowded area, occupied most of tourists.

Very important to know for travellers, there is no natural shade after 11 AM, and the white cliffs reflects the hot sunlight – sunblock and beach umbrellas are essentials here.

Where to eat, the nearest restaurants and canteens

The local bar, known as Egremni Café operates just before the stairs, offering some basic meails, snacks and drinks for guests. Visitors have to keep in mind that after they walk down the stairs, in most of the time there will be no restaurants and other tourist facilities. In recent years on the shore of the beach we have seen a small cantina with some drinks and snacks, but we noticed it’s not permanent.

As a famous attraction in Lefkada Island, Egremni beach has its own interesting history until 2026. More then a decade ago, before the earthquake of November 2015, the path to the beach looked different. Most of the old stairs were made of concrete, and for the final section of the path locals were constructed a wooden staircase.

The old stairs were collapsed in the earthquake, and the southern areas of Lefkada, even the port of Vasiliki was injured. Some parts of the asphalted road, which led down to the beach from Athani destroyed by the earthquake, and the long coastline of Egremni had no direct access for cars and for scooters for years.

After the road was finally renovated, in 2021 the ruined stairs were replaced by a metal staircase, for a safer and much stable beach access. In the same year the highest walls of the hillside were equipped by a safety mesh against falling rocks, for a higher safety of visitors.

The best lookout with amazing panoramic views to Egremni beach is situated between Athani village and Porto Katsiki beach. This lookout can’t be missed, beacuse it is located directly next to the road, besides a small parking lot for cars and scooters. Approx. 100 meters from the lookout there is a great restaurant ‘Taverna Oasis’, surrounded by lush pine forests, spacious gardens, and great menus for guests.

The views of the entire area belong to the most amazing panoramic views in Lefkada Island, and show the extraordinary natural beauties of Greece.

The second best (or someone says the first best) views to Egremni can be seen directly from the stairs. Primarily the travellers which arrive by cars will meet these panoramas, when they walk down to the sea. To admire those stair views, the passengers of the excursion boats have to climb up some stairs.

The nearest village to Egremni beach is Athani, a small and quiet village in the western mountains. The houses of the settlement are located approx. 4-5 kilometers away from this magical beach. The accommodations of Athani are recommended for families and for couples, who would like to stay away from the crowded tourist resorts.

The most popular villages of the island, such as Lefkada town, Nidri or Nikiana are situated much further away from this coast. In the area of Athani travellers can find some great villas and apartments on the hills, which are recommended by visitors.

According to our experiences, some of the local apartments have panoramic views to the surrounding mountains, and travellers who stay here can catch amazing sunsets of the west coast. Small supermarkets and restaurants serve guests here, so this village is maybe peaceful, but not abandoned at all.

Best times for a visit

The most beautiful colours can be seen here in clear, sunny weather between June until the middle of September. The best periods to visit Egremni beach is mostly depend on you: until 10:30 the beach is not crowded at all (except after the first boats arrive), but from 11:30 the places near the stairs are slowly getting much popular and crowded.

We experienced in recent years the following schedule: most visitors arrive after 10:30, stayed until 16:30, and from this time Egremni is getting much less crowded again. The most crowded times are usually when the excursion boats arrive with their passenger, and a spend an hour on the shore.

Is there a fee to visit this place?

As other beaches of Lefkada Island, a visit to Egremni beach is completely free in 2026. Costs can be the price of paid parkings for cars, quads or scooters, or a tickets of boat trips.

Can we find free parking lots near the beach?

The road which leads to the parking lots is narrow, and not suitable at most places to park cars freely. Next to the road there were built wired fences, which not allow to pull over to the side of the road. According to our local sources, this is a common solution by the owners of the parking lots, to maximize their profits in paid parkings.

How many stairs are in Egremni beach?

From the last parking lot we have to walk through on a road section with a length of 1 kilometer, and the stairs start from there. There are approx. 400 stairs, which we have to walk, until we reach the sea level.

It is really hard to walking down on the stairs?

If you are at least in average condition, there will be no problem to walk down through the stairs of Egremni. Most visitors experience the real difficulty of the stairs is in hot afternoons, when we leave the coast and walk back, while the sun shines strongly and temperatures are the highest. One day later you may feel your muscles in your legs. We recommend for smaller kids or for elder people to arrive by boats, which offer much comfortable access.

Can i bring my own umbrella?

The coast is not organized at most of the time, so taking umbrellas to the beach is recommended. There are no natural shades from 10:00.

How safe is Egremni beach for visitors?

In recent years the steep walls were fenced by strong nets, to avoid falling rocks and stones. Altough every safety efforts, a visit of Egremni beach is always your own responsibility, and there is no one, who can guarantee 100% safety here. Therefore it’s recommended to find a place further away from the walls, after we arrived here.

It is a crowded beach?

According to our experts, the most crowded parts of the coast are near the stairs, but if you walk from there 50-100 meters, there will be much less people.

What equipment is neccessary for a visit?

We always suggest the following, when take a trip to Egremni: fresh water, high quality sunblock, beach umbrella, summer hat, comfortable sandals or shoes, some food.

When can we see the best colours here for taking top photos?

The most beautiful colours of Egremni can be seen from 12:00 to 14:00, in direct and strong sunlight from June to September, on a clear day without clouds. The blue colours are much more intense, when the waves are significant – this phenomenon is known as the ‘Lefkada Blue’!
