Marantochori (Μαραντοχώρι) is a small agricultural village in the southern side Lefkada Island, located between Nidri and Vasiliki.

Where is Marantochori in Lefkada Island, and how to get there

Marantochori lies in the southeast part of Lefkada Island, approx. 32 kilometers from the capital, 16 kilometers away from Nidri, and 5 kilometers away from Vasiliki. The main road, which leads on the east coast and connect Lefkada town with Vasiliki, leads through the center of Marantochori.

What to find in Marantochori village

In Lefkada Island the area of Marantochori is one of the most important agricultural regions, where olive forests and grapeyards are the most common products, and important plants for local farmers. This village belongs to the medium sized settlements of the region, where tourism is much less significant, compared to coastal resorts such as in Nidri, in Agios Nikitas or in Vasiliki.

The largest supermarkets of the village are situated next to the main road, such as ‘Kritikos’, while the apartments and studios, which can be rented here, were built on the hillsides as well.

This area is a quite good sample to see, what if there was no tourism on the island. Other villages in this area are quite similar to Marantochori: Kontarena and Evgiros are tiny settlements, where mostly local farmers live. The best local restaurants are Sto Roloi (Στο ρολόι) and Potamos Grill house in the center of Marantochori, while to reach an other recommended tavern, you have to drive to Kontarena, where The Old Plane Tree Restaurant (Ο γέρο πλάτανος) is waiting for guests with delicious meals.

A local bakery is known as Bakery O Rizos, which is operating since 1979, directly next to Kritikos supermarket. The atmospheres of the settlement are very peaceful, you feel like you are somewhere far away from the tourist crowds, and from the noise of the world.

Mentionable sights of Marantochori are situated further away from the village, such as the emerald coloured Ammoussa beach approx. 5 kilometers away, or the other local gem, Afteli beach 5.5 kilometers away.

One of the best sights near Marantochori is an old church, called Agios Georgios Monastery
(Μονή Αγίου Γεωργίου). This small monastery can be find in the northwest outskirts of the village – on the main road a small road sign shows the junction, where you have to turn off the road.

In the port of Vasiliki daily boat trips are available to Porto Katsiki beach and Egremni beach on the west coast, or we can catch a taxi boat to Agiofili beach. A beautiful village of the area is Sivota village, approx. 5 kilometers away from Marantochori, where a lot of restaurants await, surrounded by a very picturesque port and hundreds of flowers.
