Marantochori (Μαραντοχώρι) is a small agricultural village in the southern side Lefkada Island, located between Nidri and Vasiliki. In the area there are some nice beaches and hidden gems of the east coast, such as the tiny Afteli beach and Ammoussa beach are situated just a few kilometers away from here.

Where is Marantochori in Lefkada Island, and how to get there

Marantochori is located in the east side of Lefkada island, approx 32 kilometers from the capital, 16 kilometers away from Nidri, and 5 kilometers away from Vasiliki. The main road which leads on the east and connect Lefkada town with Vasiliki, divides Marantochori into two parts.

To reach Marantochori we suggest to drive a car or scooter, because of the lack of local public buses.

What to find in Marantochori

In Lefkada Island Marantochori is one of the most important agricultural villages, where olive forests and grapeyards provide a living for the local farmers. This village belongs to the medium sized settlements of the region, where the tourism is not so signifiant, as in the coastal resorts such as in Nidri, in Agios Nikitas or in Vasiliki.

The largest supermarkets are situated next to the main road (Kritikos), while the apartments and studios, which can be rented were built on the hills as well.

This area is a specially good sample to see what if there was no tourism on the island. The other villages in this area are quite similar to Marantochori: Kontarena and Evgiros are small settlements, where mostly local farmers live. The best restaurants are Sto Roloi (Στο ρολόι) and Potamos Grill house in the center of Marantochori, while to reach the other recommended tavern you have to drive to Kontarena, where The Old Plane Tree Restaurant (Ο γέρο πλάτανος) is waiting for guests.

A local bakery is known as Bakery O Rizos, which is operating since 1979 next to Kritikos supermarket. The atmospheres of the settlement is very peaceful, you feel like you are somewhere far away from the noise of the world.

Sights and attractions in Marantochori, what to see

Other mentionable sights of Marantochori are situated further away, such as the emerald coloured Ammoussa beach approx. 5 kilometers away, and the other gem Afteli beach approx. 5.5 kilometers away.

One of the best sights near Marantochori is an old church, called Agios Georgios Monastery
(Μονή Αγίου Γεωργίου). This small monastery can be find in the northwest outskirts of the village – on the main road a small road sign shows the junction, where you have to turn off the road.

These beaches are small, but very picturesque places on the east coast of Lefkada Island, and belong the most beautiful beaches of the east coastline.

Other attraction in Marantochori its interesting bell tower made of stone, directly next to a small square, an can be seen from the main road. In the direction of Kontarena the Olive Oil Factory “SKLAVENITIS” and its shop is open for visitors, and show how olive oils are produced.

For sightseeing its worth to visit the charming fishing village of Vasiliki, which is situated about 6 kilometers away from here. In the port of Vasiliki daily boat trips are available to Porto Katsiki beach and Egremni beach on the west coast, or catch a taxi boat to Agiofili beach. In the area you can discover Sivota village 5 kilometers away, where a lot of restaurants await, surrounded by a very picturesque port.

The apartments and studios of Marantochori are recommended if you like silence and the peaceful country life, far away from the bustling tourist resorts and from the crowds. A car is recommended to explore the best attractions of the area, because this village lacks sea views and coastal promenade. But the picturesque Vasiliki lies just 6 kilometers away, so a coastal village where boat trips and a bunch of restaurants and shops are located, can be reached by a few minutes of driving.
