Where is Kavalikefta beach in Lefkada Island, and how to get there

To find Kavalikefta beach in Lefkada Island you have to know this gem is also known as ‘Kalamitsi beach’, because the nearest village is Kalamitsi, situated approx. 4,5 kilometers away from the beach. Other significant villages are located further away, because this coast is located 24 kilometers away from the capital, Lefkada town, and 11 kilometers away from the charming Agios Nikitas.

To reach Kavalikefta beach you have to drive to Kalamitsi, from where a narrow road leads down to the Ionian Sea between lush olive groves. Get ready, on this route you will meet several hairpin bends and narrow sections, so we suggest an experienced driver!

Parking in Kalamitsi beach (and also in Megali Petra beach) is usually one of the hardest parking situations all over Lefkada Island, especially during some high season days.

After the paid parking lots of Kavalikefta beach got filled in late morning, the only option for parking is literally a stop next to the road. Unfortunately this solution is the worst place for parking, because the last road section is very narrow, filled with hairpin bends and road defects, and the cars which park roadside, make sometimes very difficult traffic situations!

If you visit Kavalikefta beach (or Megali Petra beach, which is situated also here) by car, keep in mind that your vehicle can be easily damaged by unexperienced or negligant drivers during high season.

In recent years we have experienced several times that parking at Kavalikefta beach by car (or leaving this place) can be very difficult, especially on some days in high season, and highly depends on your actual luck. To best practice to avoid these parking / leaving difficulties in the months of July and August is to arrive to Kavalikefta in the morning, and drive back in the late afternoon, when oncoming traffic almost stops.

What to find and what to do in Kavalikefta beach, where to eat and drink

A decade ago Kavalikefta beach was much less popular than other beaches on the west coast of Lefkada Island, but in recent years it has became much more famous due to great photos and useful travel guides. After you have parked successfully, just walk through Kavalikefta beach bar, because visitors can reach the sea through the cantin.

While you walk down to the sea, you will notice the central areas are near the coffee bar. This is the most organized part of Kavalikefta beach, where some parasols and sunbeds lie in the sand. The local sunbeds are not free, you have to pay for using this equipment, but it’s worth to know slightly further away travellers can also use their parasols.

Between these rocks the seabed is primarily filled by stones, pebbles and coarse sand. If you want to jump into the sea, you can climb up to the top of some rocks, but always be very careful, and before jump make sure it’s safe! It can be also important, that Kavalikefta beach is not so family friendly place due to the stones and rocks, smaller children need constant supervision here.

Sea temperatures of Kavalikefta beach are similar to other western beach of Lefkada Island. The average temperatures of the sea are 21- 23 Celsius in May, 24 – 26 Celsius from middle of June to the first weeks of September, and 22 – 24 Celsius in post season. You need to know local sea temperatures depend highly on actual weather conditions and sea currents.

The local bar is known as Kavalikefta beach bar, which offer for visitors cold drinks, snacks, some basic meals, and a small resting area with some shade.

We mentioned before that Kavalikefta beach is located on the west coast of Lefkada, where sometimes the waves of the sea are getting big. But you should know that due to the large rocks and stones the swimming could be dangerous, and the force of the waves as well.

When you walk at the southern side of Kavalikefta beach, you will see some secluded places, which is usually less crowded than others. In southern direction you can walk to the other superb gem of Lefkada Island, which is called Megali Petra beach. This area has also some giant rocks, and its name represent well, because the name of Megali Petra beach means in English is simply ‘Giant Rock’.
